Challenging the boundaries of contemporary jazz, Scottish composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist corto.alto is bringing a fresh perspective to the genre.

The moniker of Glasgow-based Liam Shortall shows his pride in his Irish-Spanish heritage with corto.alto translating to short.tall in Spanish. Having cut his teeth playing trombone in the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and making beats in his bedroom, corto.alto’s debut album ‘Bad With Names’ dropped October 6, 2023, and is all about “forgiving yourself”.

Bringing together some of the UK’s finest young musicians, including Mercury prize nominated pianist Fergus McCreadie, trumpet player James Copus, trombonist Anoushka Nanguy,

and drummer Graham Costello, with the flair of a string quartet, taking the corto.alto sound in a new direction.

Combining a heady mix of intuitive improvisation, electronic production, broken beat bounce and bass-heavy dub, corto.alto is a traditional jazz head raised in the age of the internet.

We are so excited to have corto.alto perform at Cross The Tracks 2024, he is ready to rip up the rulebook and defy your expectations.
