Talking Tracks with Akemi Fox
Manchester artist Akemi Fox started uploading songs to SoundCloud for fun in her first year of uni. Then, in 2020, Akemi released her incredible debut EP ‘Colour You In', showcasing her unique sound – a blend of alternative R&B with an authentic, sultry and laid-back vibe. Akemi collaborates with producer Teo, who creates beautifully crafted soundscapes that perfectly complement her style.
We caught up with Akemi about her experience at Cross The Tracks 2023, her upcoming performance at Factory International and what we can expect from a day out in Manchester with her.
Akemi has well and truly solidified her place in the thriving Northern music scene. Having been described as the next generation of Manchester talent, Akemi is preparing to support major names like Children of Zeus, Loose Ends and Ghetts in what is set to be an unreal night on December 9th at Factory International.
Speaking about the upcoming performance, Akemi said, “I am so excited. So honoured to be a part of such an amazing lineup, a pinch-me moment for sure! It's such a compliment to be named the next generation of Manchester talent, it fuels me to put on my best performance.”
As a festival that uplifts rising artists, we were beyond honoured to have Akemi showcase her talents on the Locomotion stage at Cross The Tracks 2023. Delivering an unforgettable performance; her lo-fi sound, sultry vocals, and R&B beats created an incredible atmosphere that was both nostalgic and fresh.
Akemi began writing songs at a young age and found it became a way to process her experiences and emotions; “Songwriting is like keeping a diary, whatever I’m feeling that day I try and make it into some kind of song. It's very therapeutic.”
She continued, “Sometimes the context of the song changes through the writing but the mood that I have gone into the session with will still be felt through the song [...] I recommend everyone go write a song for fun even if you don't sing, you'll feel more free afterwards.”
Akemi has worked with producer Teo for almost 6 years; a lengthy collaboration that has allowed Akemi to fully open herself up and create art in a safe space. She told us, “I feel like I can just be myself completely. I’m quite shy when it comes to making music, especially with new people, so it is so lovely to work with someone you can be completely relaxed with because I feel like you get some of your best songs.”
Akemi's music provides an opportunity for escapism and her laid-back, chilled sound would be perfect for any occasion, describing her sound she says; "Perfect for a summer's day or when you're commuting; maybe even winding down at night or at an after party, for any moment really."
Her music has evolved since her debut single 'Weightless’ was released in 2018. Akemi's new single, ‘give it to me’ is a ‘lil bit of a sexy song’ and whilst it's still her familiar chilled sound, the track definitely has a more playful vibe than her first single. Akemi expressed, “I love making songs for all different moods. I do often talk about love but I feel it is something we can all relate to in some way.”
We wanted to get to know Akemi a bit better so we asked her some weird and wonderful questions to find out more.
Being a woman in the music industry can come with its own set of challenges and opportunities. Who are some female British artists you’d like to spotlight?
Oooh so many! I’d have to say my Manchester babes Nina Cobham, Francesca, Victoria Jane, Mali Hayes, FLISS. Also, Mya Craig, Nat Slater, Rosa Cecilia and so many more. You should check them all out, they're fabulous!
What animal best represents your personality and why?
I've been told a Chihuahua. Which I could say is a lil offensive but it's kinda of true. I am a little snappy sometimes but overall I’m sweet!
What's one song you'd play on the aux in the car?
Essence by WizKid and Tems, it just makes me feel so good.
What is your go-to karaoke song?
Me Myself and I by Beyoncé, it’s hard to sing but I love a good ballad that gets me in my feels!
Who are you listening to right now?
I’m really enjoying Ambre, Destin Conrad and Mack Keane at the moment, their songs are just so good I can't get enough. I'm always revisiting Hiatus Kaiyote Choose Your Weapon Album, I just love them so much. It's all very much R&B and Soul currently, it really inspires my writing.
If you were to give us a tour of Manchester, what would be your not-to-miss spots?
I always say you need to try the Kool Runnings truck in Old Trafford, it is one of my favourite Caribbean food spots. Firehouse is so really fun for frozen margaritas and food, they also have really cool dancers. You need to get a matcha and the best French toast from Federal Cafe. Vintage Folk is the best for second-hand clothes. They open their warehouse every last weekend of the month. I always spend all my money there.
Make sure you check out Akemi on Insta and listen to her brand new single ‘be yourself’ on Spotify. If you wanna catch her live make sure you grab tickets to see her support Children of Zeus and Ghetts on December 9th at Factory International in Manchester.
