Madlib is a true innovator who has pushed the boundaries of Hip Hop music. Describing himself as "a DJ first, producer second, and MC last," Madlib is the alias of Otis Jackson, Jr., who has become one of the most celebrated artists in Hip Hop since emerging on the scene in the early '90s.

He began making music in his early teens and was heavily influenced by the diverse sounds of his hometown. His Father, Otis Jackson, Sr., was a working jazz and blues musician, his Mother was a guitarist and songwriter, and his Uncle was a noted jazz trumpeter. In the early 1990s, Jackson began releasing his own music under the name Madlib, and he quickly gained a following for his unique and experimental style.

Madlib gained prominence as part of the Hip Hop group Lootpack; however, it was his solo work and collaboration with like-minded artists that established him as a visionary in the industry. One of his most notable collaborations was with MF DOOM, resulting in the critically acclaimed ‘Madvillainy’ (2004). His alter-ego, Quasimoto, a high-pitched animated character, further exemplifies his willingness to defy conventions and embrace the avant-garde.

Over the next two decades, Madlib continued to release solo albums and collaborations with other artists. He has worked with a wide range of musicians, including J Dilla, Freddie Gibbs, and Kanye West. In addition to his production work, Madlib is also a skilled rapper and turntablist. He is also a respected DJ, and he has toured extensively around the world.

His impact on the beat scene, experimental hip-hop, and lo-fi genres is immeasurable, earning him respect as a pioneer. Madlib is one of the most influential figures in the genre; we are so excited to have Madlib take the stage at Cross The Tracks 2024.
